As a Clinician Educator (CE), you are a highly specialized professional with unique skills and expertise – a clinician who translates education theory…but do your colleagues fully understand what you bring to the table and how you stand out from the crowd? Are you truly recognized as a “CE” in your institution?
Of course, the alternate situation is that you are “overly” recognized by colleagues, resulting in an inundation of requests to provide education consultations. Without a local cadre of CEs, you are left to shoulder the growing pile of consultation requests alone.
The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada has recognized these two dilemmas.
In response it has developed the world’s first Clinician Educator curriculum and certification process. Designed to allow candidates to progress at their own pace, while juggling clinical and academic responsibilities, the CE diploma (CE-D) is competency-based, using an e-portfolio to demonstrate actual application of theories and skills to practical medical education challenges. Successful candidates are recognized as a Clinician Educator Diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (DRCPSC(CE)).
This new Royal College category of certification is now accepting applications for CE training centres. In late 2014, the Royal College will begin accepting applications for practice-eligible CEs (i.e. “grandfathering” credentials) who wish to use the DRCPSC(CE) credential.
