We’re doing something a little different this week as we welcome guest host: Lara Varpio (@LaraVarpio)

Do you get lost in the med ed lingo? Do you regularly say ‘epistemology’ ‘reflexivity’ or ‘ethnography’? Do you want to know more? Lara Varpio, Associate Professor and Associate Director of Research, Graduate Programs in Health Professions Education st Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD gets the KeyLIME hosts up to speed.

Here is a list of her five recommended resources:

1) As a good starting point for those trying to work in qualitative research:  Qualitative Research in Counseling Psychology: A Primer on Research Paradigms and Philosophy of Science

2) To help qualitative researchers answer questions they commonly get from medical educators: JGME Qualitative Rip Out Series

3) If you’re looking to learn more about grounded theory: AMEE Guide #70

4) To learn about the guiding principles that you should consider before conducting qualitative research:  Standards for reporting qualitative research: a synthesis of recommendations.

5) Finally, she lists two great articles on methods and methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative that are used in modern medical education research:  Beyond a good story: from Hawthorne Effect to reactivity in health professions education research and Shedding the cobra effect: problematising thematic emergence, triangulation, saturation and member checking

To learn more about each recommendation and why she recommends them (plus a few bonus recommendations!) listen in here!
